First-Timer’s Guide to Pilates: What to Wear, Bring, and Know Before You Go
Thinking about trying Pilates for the first time?
We remember those first session jitters like it was yesterday. That’s why we’ve designed the BODYBAR experience to be welcoming and inclusive from the start. You don’t need to know all the terms or be an elite athlete. You just need to show up with an open mind and a willingness to try. We’ll be right there with you, every rep of the way.
Here’s everything you need to know to make your first Pilates experience a great one.

What Should You Wear to Pilates?
You don’t need to buy a whole new workout wardrobe to try Pilates. Comfortable, breathable athletic clothing that lets you move freely is all you need.
Leggings, fitted shorts, tank tops, and athletic tees are all great options. Since Pilates involves stretching, bending, and moving through different positions, we recommend clothing that stays comfortably in place throughout your workout.
And don’t forget your feet! BODYBAR requires grip socks during class to help you maintain traction and stability on the equipment.

What Should You Bring to Your First Pilates Class?
Keep it simple! Here’s a quick checklist of the essentials:
- Grip socks: These are required for all BODYBAR classes. Don’t have a pair? You can purchase them at any studio.
- Water bottle: Stay hydrated before and after your workout.
- Small towel (optional): A handy addition if you like to work up a sweat. (We sure do!)
- An open mind: You don’t need to have all the moves mastered. That’s what we’re here for!
That’s it! We’ll provide the equipment and expert instruction every step of the way.
What Can You Expect at Your First BODYBAR Pilates Class?
First things first: Arrive about 15 minutes early. This gives you time to get acquainted with the studio, meet your instructor, and ask any questions before class gets underway.
If you’re new to Reformer Pilates, the equipment might look a little unfamiliar at first. But don’t let the springs and straps intimidate you!
The Reformer is a specially designed piece of Pilates equipment featuring a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, and straps that provide resistance and support throughout your workout. It’s a key part of the BODYBAR experience, helping you build strength, improve stability, and challenge your muscles through controlled movement.
Your instructor will guide you through the equipment setup and exercises, offering modifications to meet your experience and comfort level.

Which BODYBAR Pilates Class Is Best for Beginners?
Not all Pilates classes are the same, and that’s part of the fun! BODYBAR offers a variety of workouts designed around different goals, energy levels, and ways of moving.
If you’re brand new to Pilates, PRECISION | Classic Reformer is a great place to start. This class focuses on proper alignment, foundational Pilates movements, and controlled technique, giving you an opportunity to get comfortable with the equipment while enjoying a challenging full-body workout.
As you build confidence and strength we encourage branching out into more athletic, cardio-driven, and strength-focused classes to keep your routine fresh.

Is Pilates Hard for Beginners?
Pilates is designed to challenge you, but you don’t have to be an experienced athlete to enjoy it.
At BODYBAR, our approach combines low-impact movement with purposeful resistance to build strength, improve flexibility, and develop better balance and body awareness. You’ll work muscles you may not even realize you have, all while learning how to move with greater control.
And while some exercises might feel difficult at first, there’s always room to adjust. Your instructor can offer modifications to help you work at your own pace, along with progressions as you become more comfortable.
Remember, everyone in the studio has been a first-timer! There’s no competition, no judgment, and definitely no expectation of perfection.
What Happens After Your First Pilates Class?
You did it! Your first class is officially in the books. So, what’s next?
You may notice some muscle soreness afterward, especially in areas that haven’t been challenged in quite the same way before. That’s normal when you’re trying a new workout.
The more familiar you become with the movements and equipment, the more comfortable you’ll likely feel. Over time, a consistent Pilates routine can help you develop greater strength, flexibility, balance, and control.
And there’s no need to rush the process. Finding a routine you enjoy and can stick with is what matters most.
